Whole families can experience wonderful vacations in the winter across the U.S.

Ice Hockey

Since the building of the first ice rink in 1894, ice hockey has become a very popular sport in the U.S. Now there are 24 National Hockey League teams. Teams like the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks are fan favorites.

Snowboarders who participate in the Olympics try to outdo one another with stunts that defy gravity and are exhilarating to watch. In a slalom event, the skiers have to race down a course and make tight turns around gates. In halfpipe events, the snowboarders must perform tricks in a channel constructed of snow.

Figure skating

Figure skating requires skaters to be athletic and creative. The choreography is innovative and the skaters will perform all kinds of spins and jumps. The difficulty of their routine and perfection in performing can result in high scores. The national governing body is U.S. Figure Skating. It nurtures a passion for the sport in young skaters.

For many years, figure skating was the only Winter Olympic event that allowed females to participate. American figure skaters have had great success in the Winter Olympics. At least one skater has won a medal for many consecutive years. Americans thoroughly enjoy watching the figure skating events at the Olympics.

Cross-country skiing

Cross-country skiers glide across trails at high speeds which is a test of both their stamina and skills. The trails are usually quite flat and wide, but skiers may also have to ski up some hills. Many of the state parks and national forests have cross-country ski trails. Skiers enjoy the exercise, fresh air, and scenery. At ski resorts, skiers can enjoy warm fires and taste some great winter food.

Colorado has some top resorts, such as Devil’s Thumb Ranch, that offer miles of cross-country trails. Aspen Snowmass and Crested Butte are some of the other resorts with good reviews.

Montana is another top location for cross-country skiing. Lone Mountain Ranch is one with groomed trails for all skill levels. Skiers can enjoy scenery like aspen and pine trees framed by mountains.

Methow Trails in Washington and Maplelag Resort in Minnesota are other popular locations for cross-country skiing. Bretton Woods Nordic Center in New Hampshire is another prevalent option.
